Profile

Nikolaus is a German and European Patent Attorney and a representative before the Unified Patent Court. He specialises in high-tech inventions, in particular quantum technologies, semiconductors, electrical engineering, software and telecommunications, and covers the full life of a patent: drafting and prosecution, oppositions and nullity actions, and enforcement, together with advice on freedom to operate, licence agreements, competitor monitoring and employee inventions.

Before founding noēsis, he spent nine years at BARDEHLE PAGENBERG in Munich, joining in 2017 as a patent engineer and trainee patent attorney, qualifying as a patent attorney in 2021 and becoming a partner in 2024.

His technical expertise is rooted in experimental quantum physics. He studied physics at ETH Zurich and the École Polytechnique, graduating with distinction, and completed his doctorate at the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics in Garching with experimental research on the foundations of quantum computers, working with ultracold quantum gases and polar molecules. After a postdoctoral position at the same institute, he worked as an R&D project manager at Siemens Corporate Technology, developing superconducting propulsion systems. He has published in atomic physics, quantum physics and neuroinformatics.

Selected matters

  • Represented Cisco, together with a colleague, in nullity proceedings before the Federal Court of Justice; the Mala patent was revoked (X ZR 98/24, 2026)
