Dr. rer. nat., Dipl.-Phys. (Physics)
German and European Patent Attorney, UPC Representative
Nuclear fusion, software and AI, physics
Niels is a German and European Patent Attorney and a representative before the Unified Patent Court. His practice focuses on patent litigation and patent prosecution in the high-tech industry, in particular nuclear fusion, software and artificial intelligence, telecommunications, and physics.
Before founding noēsis, he spent seven years in Munich patent litigation practices, first at Hogan Lovells and most recently at BARDEHLE PAGENBERG. He represented international clients in infringement and validity proceedings before the German courts and the Unified Patent Court, in opposition and appeal proceedings before the European Patent Office, and in nullity proceedings before the Federal Patent Court and the Federal Court of Justice, including several SEP and FRAND disputes in mobile communications. He trained as a patent attorney at a prosecution-focused firm, drafting patent applications in optics, communication technologies, automotive, electronics and software.
His technical expertise is rooted in some ten years of research in plasma physics and fusion diagnostics: a doctorate from the University of Cologne and the Bonn-Cologne Graduate School of Physics and Astronomy (Honors Branch), a postdoctoral position in Jülich accompanied by a EUROfusion Researcher Grant, and research stays at MIT and the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He has (co-)authored 34 scientific publications.
Since 2023 he has been building legal tech tools and AI solutions for patent practice and has published and lectured on the subject. At noēsis he combines demanding patent work with AI-supported workflows.
